Preparing Your Car for Winter Temperatures
At Hawk Ford of St. Charles, we believe winterizing your vehicle is extremely important. We are a Ford dealer catering to Wayne, Elgin, and other towns and cities in Illinois, and we want to make sure our customers stay safe this winter season.
There are several steps you can take to prepare your vehicle for winter, thereby ensuring your safety and extending the life of your car.
Steps to Winterize Your Vehicle
- Take it for a tune up. This allows you to diagnose any issues that may worsen, and lead to expensive fixes in the future, before temperatures drop. It is also important to top off any fluids that may need refilling and get your oil changed. If your battery is old, you may want to consider replacing it, as well.
- Check your tires and make sure they do not need replacing, or if they do, replace them before the snow starts falling. Worn out tires, or tires that have damage such as dry rot, cannot grip slick or icy pavement. The grooves in new tires allow the wheels to ride on wet surfaces without sliding.
- Oil the door jams of your car doors to prevent them from freezing shut in extreme cold.
- Be sure to check on the windshield wipers. Make sure they are either cleaned or replaced before winter to ensure they can be relied upon in snowstorms and sleeting conditions. Also be sure to keep an ice scraper with you at all times.
- Make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you are ever stranded. Things this might include are blankets, sweaters, an extra pair of boots, a shovel, gloves, and a can of gasoline.
