Road Trip Car Preparations

Summer is around the corner and we know how many people are preparing for their warm-weather road trips. Our Ford dealer in West Chicago is your go-to before you begin packing the car. Make sure you figure out if your car is ready to take on the long trip with you.

Check on your coolant and oil

If your car is running and something smells sickly sweet, it is most likely your coolant. It needs to be replaced, especially if you see green or yellow streaks on the engine oil dipstick. To be safe, take your vehicle in for an oil change and make sure the following is checked out as well: brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant strength, and power-steering fluid.

How is your battery running?

Trust us, you’d rather pay for a battery replacement than for the tow truck and a new battery when yours shuts down during your road trip.

Cosmetics: windshield and flat tires

Check your windshield for cracks and chips. Regardless of the upcoming road trip, if you have any windshield issues, they should be fixed ASAP. Make sure your tires have the correct amount of air in them. If any are flat, double check if it just needs air, or if it needs to be replaced altogether.

Are the brakes working?

Allow a mechanic to check on your entire brake system, especially if you are traveling for long hours at a time. Getting your brakes checked is relatively cheap and the mechanic will also check the master cylinder, calipers, wheel cylinders, and brake lines.

The most obvious for the upcoming road trip: gas

The last thing you want to do when you get on the road is to stop at a gas station one hour into your long trip. Make sure your tank is fully filled and throughout your travels, try to keep your take at around half-full to avoid any issues. You don’t want to be stuck with no gas station in sight!

Summer is a great time for road trips. If you have any issues with your car that needs immediate attention before you begin your journey, head over to our Ford dealer in West Chicago to have your car inspected. And remember: drive safely!
